I’m a Reader in Media and Communication at Sheffield Hallam University, in the faculty of Science, Technology and Arts (STA). I teach on a range of modules in the department of Media Arts and Communication. I’m also a member of the C3Ri Research Centre at SHU and I sit on a number of faculty and university committees, including the faculty research ethics committee, research centre standing committee, Creating Knowledge conference committee, university validation panels and academic conduct panels. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

My research interests are varied but I’m particularly interested in fan studies, audience research, internet cultures, social media, religion in the media, television studies, celebrity culture, gaming cultures, gender and sexuality, reality and factual TV, soap opera and popular drama, and media representations.

I’m a regular film and TV critic and commentator for Radio Sheffield and also contribute to The Conversation. I’ve been interviewed for various media, including The Observer, BBC Two’s Artsnight, BBC Four documentaries and independent films – for media enquiries, please contact me via r.a.deller@shu.ac.uk.

I’m a peer reviewer for several journals, conferences and publishers, and am on the editorial board for Celebrity Studies journal.

I’m a member of MeCCSA, AOIR, the Mediating Religion network, #wiasn, the Selfies Research Network and the Fan Studies network.

What else might you want to know about me? I was born and brought up in Grimsby and still sort-of-vaguely support the Mariners, but I have lived in Sheffield since 1998 so I’m kind of a Northern mishmash these days in terms of my dialect, accent and idioms. As well as my academic work, I review theatre for Broadway World UK, and am an active member of local drama society Midland Players – for whom I have directed four plays, most recently All My Sons in 2019, as well as acting and helping backstage or front of house. I also write for various entertainment blogs. Oh, and in my spare time I write fiction, and completed a creative writing MA in 2017.

I am also rubbish at updating this site and my social media – I have chronic pain in both arms relating to injuries, and rely on voice software, which all means writing takes about 5 times longer than it used to!

You can also find me on Academia.edu, SHU’s website, ResearchGate, Twitter and various other places online. I can be emailed at r.a.deller@shu.ac.uk.
